Astrid's top 5 tips to beat the winter colds

The winter cold and flu season has hit everyone hard this year. Those nasty viruses turn our lives and schedules upside down. Mums, Dads, workers, carers and kids; we can be struck down overnight and laid up in bed for days. We all have such busy lives, running from school drop off to work to meetings to sporting activities that we quickly become run down. Suddenly, we to feel that ominous tickle in the back of the throat. Your body is telling you, “Watch out! Here comes your cold – it’s time to rest.”

As a Nutritional Consultant, I often get asked questions like “How can I boost my immune system?” or “How can I reduce the time I am sick?” So, here are my top 5 list of immune system boosters and support to help you beat the winter colds and flus.

Eat foods rich in Vitamin C

Pineapple, oranges, kiwi fruit, celery and broccoli are high in Vitamin C. High in antioxidants and bromelain, they play a major role in preventing and reducing the time of a cold. They also have important anti-inflammatory effects in reducing swelling, sore throat and sinusitis.

Make sure you eat nutritious food every day

Eat lots of wholefoods, e.g. brown rice, whole grains and legumes, whole fruit and vegetables, lean meats and milk.

Increase your intake of natural antimicrobial foods

Garlic, onion, ginger, artichokes, raw honey, lemon and cinnamon help ward off colds or enhance our immune system. Add them to your meal, dessert or try my easy tea recipe when you feel a cold coming on.

Get plenty of sleep

Our bodies do most of their repair work while we are asleep so if we’re not getting enough we will quickly become run down making it easier for a virus to infiltrate our weakened immune system.

Wash your hands often

It doesn’t matter what line of work you are in or who you are around, if you are coming in contact with people who are contagious then you are in the viruses’ line of fire. Twenty seconds of washing hands in hot or cold water is all it takes.

And I’ll throw one more in for good luck as well – keep up your intake of water!!! Water helps every function in our body. It oxygenates your blood and flushes out all the toxins, keeps your eyes and mouth clean and helps you digest your food which is imperative for nutrient intake.

When our immune system is working well we don’t think twice about it, but when it’s compromised it can effect all parts of our lives.
