Chronic Fatigue and Exercise

Do you or someone you love suffer from Chronic Fatigue? Or Cancer related Fatigue? We are here to help increase your energy levels and improve your quality of life.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), is a complex condition resulting in persistent fatigue that is not relieved by rest and cannot be medically explained.

The Medical Journal of Australia describes CFS as “a descriptive term used to define a recognisable pattern of symptoms that cannot be attributed to any alternative condition.”

CFS symptoms may last for months or years, and in some people relapse may occur. While there is no cure for CFS, treatment aims to reduce the severity of symptoms and improve your quality of daily living. Cancer Related Fatigue (CRF) is similar to CFS, where the ongoing fatigue is not related to cancer or cancer treatment, and affects approximately 30% of people with cancer. The treatment for CFS and CRF are very similar, and the goals of treatment remain the same.

We as Accredited Exercise Physiologists are trained to deliver various different treatment options to improve the health and wellbeing of people with CFS. These options include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Graded Exercise Therapy, Cognitive Exercise Therapy, and Lifestyle Changes. Lifestyle changes include activity pacing, improvement of sleep-wake cycle and behaviour modification.  Lifestyle modifications such as avoiding daytime napping and spreading demanding activities across the day or the week can greatly assist in the management of your fatigue symptoms. Treatment also includes education on CFS or CRF and how to increase your energy fuel tank. If your body were a car and your energy levels are the petrol tank, we want to teach you how to best use your cars energy tank to get you through your daily activities.
